The Energy Loss Calculator (ELC) mode in Fluke's 1775 Power Quality Analyzer is designed to discover where energy losses exist in electrical systems, by using Fluke's patented Unified Power calculation, developed at the University of Valencia.
In every electrical system, some energy is wasted - some energy is not delivered to the loads in the systems to drive them. This waste comes from:
- Transmission of effective power – Heat generated as power flows through cables
- Reactive power – Does not drive loads but consumes energy
- Unbalance losses – Unbalanced loads contribute to wasted energy
- Distortion power – Non-linear loads create harmonics that consume power, but do not perform work
- Neutral losses – Neutral losses can be due to both unbalance and harmonics, leading to increased heat and requiring larger conductors
