Monitors used in studios and post-production facilities are the sole instrument used to judge the resulting material. To be able to make a qualitative judgment, the monitors have to perform according to specified norm. These norms might either be locally defined or the SMPTE or EBU norms may be used. Though the monitors used may be high quality, they do change with time. In order to keep the monitors up to specification, they have to be calibrated at specified intervals. SMPTE recommends that the monitors are calibrated every 500 hours. In practice however, the monitors should be checked every time they are switched on. The alignment of gray scale are saturation (as well as hue in the NTSC system) may be done manually to get the highest accuracy. Auto set-up systems may be employed with monitors equipped with circuitry for this. These systems usually give satisfactory results. Simple systems very often rely on the use of simple light sensors whereas more advanced systems use color sensors with correct CIE standard observer response. Sony Monitors & Compatibility The Auto Color Alignment System for Sony is dedicated to operate together with the Sony Broadcast monitors. The set-up of the Sony monitors is menu-controlled. To use the system, just select automatic set-up with the PTV probe in the monitor menu system. The interface is applicable to the following model numbers:
