Monitors used in studios and post-production facilities are the sole instrument used to judge the resulting material. To be able to make a qualitative judgment, the monitors have to perform according to specified norm. These norms might either be locally defined or the SMPTE or EBU norms may be used.

Though the monitors used may be high quality, they do change with time. In order to keep the monitors up to specification, they have to be calibrated at specified intervals. SMPTE recommends that the monitors are calibrated every 500 hours. In practice however, the monitors should be checked every time they are switched on. The alignment of gray scale are saturation (as well as hue in the NTSC system) may be done manually to get the highest accuracy. Auto set-up systems may be employed with monitors equipped with circuitry for this. These systems usually give satisfactory results. Simple systems very often rely on the use of simple light sensors whereas more advanced systems use color sensors with correct CIE standard observer response.

Barco ® Monitors & Compatibility

Users of Barco monitors may wish to use the auto set-up feature which as standard is included in many of the Barco monitors. Barco supplies different types of monitors. Some can be used for auto set-up with a color analyzer and some only with the Barco light probe. When using the light probe, only the factory settings are used as a base for the calibration. Changes in the light emitted from the phosphor are not compensated. To take this into account, the use of a color analyzer is recommended.

The PTV system is compatible with all Barco ® monitors which can be calibrated automatically with the THOMA color analyzer. This includes all the monitors equipped with the Barco ® menu assistance for alignment, which is included in most monitors, except the 10 inch monitors.

The PM 5639/63 is the optionally needed equipment for updating a PM 5639/00 or PM 5639/01 for automatic alignment of Barco ® monitors.
